Gardening for Beginners
Gardening for Beginners is a hands-on workshop designed to give you the confidence and practical skills to start growing successfully.
Whether you are a complete novice or already have some experience with plants, you will leave with a clear understanding of essential gardening techniques and the confidence to begin or develop your own garden with purpose and success.
Set within our award-winning community garden, the session combines practical learning outdoors with a supportive, classroom-based introduction to key principles, ensuring you understand not just what to do, but why it works.
As an organic garden, we focus entirely on sustainable methods of caring for plants and soil, equipping you with knowledge that is environmentally responsible and easily transferable to your own growing space. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions throughout, and participants are encouraged to engage fully with both the theory and the hands-on elements of the day.
The workshop is led by Charlie, our Head Gardener and an experienced horticulture teacher, who brings both professional expertise and an approachable teaching style to the session.
This workshop will cover;
Basic horticulture terminology
Understanding your soil and growing conditions
Basic propagation techniques
Aftercare and pruning
Choosing the right plant for the right place
You are encouraged to bring your own gardedning gloves and secateurs if you have them. This workshop can also be purchased as a thoughful gift, offering a meaningful experince and practial skills that last well beyond the day itself.

Introduction to Garden Design for Urban Enviroments is a full-day, practical workshop intended to teach basic garden design principles.
Whether you are planning your own garden, considering a career in garden design, or simply interested in understanding the design process, this workshop will provide a solid foundation from which to develop your skills and ideas.
Helping you understand how successful gardens are planned, designed, and brought to life. Set within our award-winning community garden, the session combines classroom-based learning with practical observation and discussion. As an organic garden, we place a strong emphasis on environmentally responsible design practices, demonstrating how sustainable choices can enhance both the beauty and functionality of urban outdoor spaces.

Pride at Calthorpe
Join us for an evening of queer joy, learn about queer botany w/ horticulture educator Charlie Matthews & create your own placard for pride
Come along to Calthorpe Community Garden, an oasis in the middle of Kings Cross, to meet new people, learn about queer botany and create placards for Pride.
All materials will be provided, but bring along anything you may want to add to your placard.
The site is wheelchair accessible and in a friendly garden environment.
The queer botany session will be led by our gardener and horticulture educator Charlie Matthews. Our placard making session will be led by our events manager and artist Martha Armitage.
Tickets are free, however we are a charity so donations are welcome.

Mushroom Log Installation Workshop
Learn about mushroom cultivation and help us establish a mushroom growing area in our wild garden with London Mycology Project.
Join us at Calthorpe Community Garden to learn about mushroom cultivation at a workshop hosted by the London Mycology Project. Together we'll innoculate logs with mycelum to establish a mushroom growing area in our wild garden.
Adults mushroom workshop starts at 2 PM; children's workshop from 4-5:30 PM.
Regenerative mushroom cultivation can nourish soil, support ecosystems and be a powerful tool for sustainability and urban food growing. LMP (London Mycology Project) grows fungi to build soil, food security and climate resilience using creative, circular cultivation methods that anyone can implement to grow food for themselves, and for the future.
LMP works with community-led and female-driven approaches to fungi cultivation, upskilling communities to grow more resilient, regenerative futures using the power of mycelium - the vast, underground network of fungal threads that connects and nourishes ecosystems.
Through regenerative, low-tech cultivation methods, LMP teaches gourmet mushroom growing by repurposing waste products, without single-use plastic or sterile conditions. We believe in integrated, intuitive approaches that support and strengthen the local ecology, growing food for all living beings.
