Education for children & young people

Explore the garden

The garden is open to all.

We have facilities for children and young people, including an Early Years play space and garden, play structures, and a sports pitch.

We have a Weekend Play Programme for children from 6 to 14 years old and an early years programme for children under 5 years old on Saturdays (facilitated by our Early Years Educator, Joanne) and Sundays (space available to use without facilitation).

Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

Education through volunteering

Supported volunteering

Our supported volunteering and training programme uses social and therapeutic horticulture to engage disabled and older people.

Develop skills and knowledge

Participants are supported to develop gardening and horticultural skills across a number of areas they have an interest in.  These include: growing food for their own consumption, maintaining growing spaces and herbaceous borders, propagating plants from seeds and cuttings for sale and organising and / or participating in cultural food growing events. If you would like to develop your skills at Calthorpe, get in touch today!

Food Growing

Our volunteers are directly supported both one to one and in groups by one of our staff members. This close working arrangement provides the perfect opportunity for volunteers to discuss future planned projects, other interests and their own personal development. More practically, it enables volunteers to be involved in all aspects of the development of individual gardening and food growing projects.
